Willow Childrens Nursery is one of the best Early Years Nursery in Dubai. We provide the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in a nursery in a holistic and child initiated way.

Following the guidelines within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Birth to Three Matters, Willow Childrens Nursery is committed to ensuring that we comply with the learning and development goals set out through EYFS nursery planning.

It is our duty to set standards that enable our practitioners to reflect the rich and personalised experience that parents give their children at home.

We have a responsibility to ensure positive attitudes to diversity and difference. To remove or help in overcoming barriers for children where these already exist and to stretch and challenge children. All our children are given the opportunity to experience a challenging and enjoyable program of learning and development.

There are seven areas covered by the early learning goals and educational programs which are split into 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas

Fine motor - gross motor - dexterity - skills - strength - muscles - growth – milestones

Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. They handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing.

Health and self-care

Children know the importance of good health, physical exercise, a healthy diet and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. They manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet independently.

Self-confidence and self-awareness

Children are confident to try new activities and say why they like some activities more than others. They are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities. They say when they do or do not need help.

Managing feelings and behaviour

Children talk about how they and others show feelings, talk about their own and others’ behaviour, and its consequences, and know that some behaviour is unacceptable. They work as part of a group or class, understand, and follow the rules. They adjust their behaviour to different situations and take changes of routine in their stride.

Making relationships

Children play co-operatively, taking turns with others. They take account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their activity. They show sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings and form positive relationships with adults and other children.

Verbal and non-verbal - speech, body language, facial expression. Children listen attentively in a range of situations. In Willow Nursery (Umm Suqeim), they listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant comments, questions or actions. They give their attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.

Children follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. They answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events.

LITERACY * Children use emergent reading and writing until FS2

Children read and understand simple sentences.

They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately.

They also read some common irregular words.

They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways that match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences, which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

At Willow’s Nursery (Dubai Marina), children are supported in developing their understanding of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy in a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, learn, practice and talk. We provide opportunities to use number names, through interactive games and songs. We develop confidence amongst students by giving them the best early years education and guiding them every step of the way. Children will engage in activities that teach them how to recognize shapes, volume and capacity all through play activities.

People and communities

Children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. They know that other children do not always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this. They know about similarities and differences between themselves, others, families, communities and traditions.

The world

Children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and in an outdoor learning nursery understand how environments might vary from one another. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur and talk about changes.

Children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes.

Exploring using media and materials - This is about how children experiment with media and materials finding out about their properties, modifying, and manipulating them. It includes exploring sounds, patterns, movement and different tools and techniques.

Being imaginative - This is about children’s explorations into the world of pretence, building on their experiences of the real world and transforming them into something new – whether through role play, music, pretend play, block play or small world play or a range of other areas in an outdoor learning nursery.

All our very young children engage in “Heuristic” Play, they enjoy finding out about objects and discovering what can be done with them. The approach uses natural and household objects presented to babies and children so they can experiment and discover independently. Our organic nursery (Dubai) promotes an outdoor learning nursery experience and is a great way to expand a child’s knowledge of his/her natural surroundings.

Heuristic Play is a way of offering children a range of objects to explore freely, with little adult intervention. This type of activity encourages children to participate in activities for longer than a few minutes! Treasure baskets are a great resource and can contain spoons, boxes, and wooden and natural objects to explore.

We believe each and every child is unique and our practitioners ensure that each child’s individual needs are being met through high-quality play that is tailored to them, so that they develop at their own pace, having fun and learning as they play.

The methodology used at Willow Childrens Nursery interweaves the curriculum based on EYFS in a nursery and the very creative Reggio Emilia approach.

The children at Willow Childrens Nursery (Dubai) are given opportunities to direct their learning, to make choices and to develop a sense of self-esteem and pride in their achievements.

Reggio educators do not see children as empty vessels that require filling with facts. Rather they see children as full of potential, competent and capable of building their own theories.

We believe that the Reggio Emilia approach is successful because of its powerful image and deep respect for the culture of childhood, and for its strong belief that children, teachers and parents all work together in the process of building knowledge.

We cannot replicate this system, as it is exclusive to the culture in which it exists. However, through our research into the Reggio Emilia approach, we are able to enrich our daily experiences with the children in our nurseries.

Each day and every moment, we, the practitioners, follow the directions of the children and adapt ourselves, always observing, documenting, listening and interpreting their goals, theories and strategies so we can gain insight into their thinking, always ready to make changes and support the children in their discoveries.

At Willow Childrens Nursery, the educators are very concerned about what their nursery environments teach children. Hence, a great attention is given to the look and feel of the classroom. It is often referring to the environment as the third teacher.

The aesthetic beauty of the schools is seen as an important part of respecting the child and their learning environment. Equipment in the Reggio inspired nursery will consist of simple, natural world items, things from the home, recyclable materials that a child can turn into a magnificent creation. Allowing each child to observe, listen and engage in a dialogue of discovery.

Documentation of Assessment

In the Reggio Emilia approach, recording children’s work is extremely important and is used to ensure that EYFS nursery planning is reflective and responsive to the needs of children. Documenting and displaying the children’s project work is necessary for children to express, revisit, construct and reconstruct their feelings, ideas and understanding.

Similar to the portfolio approach, documentation of children’s work in progress is viewed as an important tool in the learning process for children, teachers, and parents. Emphasis is placed on the process of learning, not the end product.

Pictures of children engaged in experiences through an outdoor learning nursery, their words as they discuss what they are doing, feeling and thinking and the children’s interpretation of experience through the visual media are displayed as a graphic presentation of the dynamics of learning.

Teachers act as recorders (documenters) for the children, helping them trace and revisit their words and actions and thereby making the learning visible.

What makes the Reggio Emilia approach stand out?

In a nutshell, Reggio Emilia approach articulates children to acquire skills of critical thinking and collaboration, skills needed to take them to their next learning journey.

At Willow Childrens Nursery, our children are given opportunities for discovery every day through well-planned activities that enable teachers and children to learn from each other. Our Practitioners observe and assess the needs of each child to construct a daily rhythm that flows from the moment the children enter the nursery.

Utilizing materials that can be recycled and re-used to create masterpieces brought to life by the children’s imagination. A leaf from the garden can be turned into a whole project involving numeracy, language and understanding. Empty cardboard boxes are transformed by the child into the ‘Burj Khalifa’ a magical sailing dhow, or just used for hiding in! Therefore giving children formative early years education nursery experience.

Heuristic, meaning (to discover) is a form of natural play that involves the use of household items, shiny things, soft or rough things that stimulate and entice your child’s imagination. No one commercial toy can offer so many possibilities of discovery for a young child’s developing mind! At Willow Childrens Nursery, we give your child a very warm and welcoming nursery experience.

Light, colour and shadow play an important part in our daily rhythms. Catching rainbows made by crystals, following reflections and jumping in and out of shadows insights a child to question and wonder. Our methods allow children to find out for themselves and to know with confidence that our practitioners will be there to guide them, not to direct them, along their learning journey.
